It's Ada Lovelace Day!

October 13, 2020

It's the best day of the year - 🎉 Ada Lovelace Day!!! 🎉

At Bright Little Labs, we are huge fans of women in STEM, and we're proud to celebrate this day dedicated to all the achievements of women in science, tech, engineering and maths.

Here's a look at some amazing STEM women our very own Agent Asha is friends with (and some others she would love to be friends with too).

1. Jess Wade 👩🏽‍💻

Agent Asha's IRL (In Real Life) best friend spreads joy daily with her wit, intellect and doodling skills. Her PhD in physics has been really handy when Asha's predecessor, Detective Dot, needed help with her super-tiny-nano clues.

Jess is also a relentless advocate for equal access to STEM education. She took it upon herself to write 270 Wikipedia pages in 2018 - to make sure female scientists get the attention they deserve! Take a bow, dear Jade!

2. Margaret Hamilton 🚀

Margaret Hamilton literally got man to the moon and back with her amazing coding skills! This pioneering computer scientist created the flight software for the Apollo missions to the moon in 1969.

The world is so in awe of her, that even Lego decided to immortalise her as a figurine! Where do we get one?

3. Shirley Ann Jackson 💻

Shirley is behind LOADS of things that have made our lives a lot easier. From caller ID to fibre optic cables, Shirley has made Netflix download speeds (and fielding calls from your mum) a whole lot easier.

She was the first African American woman to receive a doctorate from the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and is a prominent voice in science and tech around the world.

4. Norma Sklarek 🏢

Norma Sklarek is the brains behind some of the largest architectural projects in the U.S. Being one of the first women to enter a male-dominated profession; the road wasn't easy for her. But, like Ada and the rest of her clan, she continued to strive and carve out her own path. What a trailblazer!

5.  Roya Mahboob 💼

Here is another woman who fought all odds to become the first female tech entrepreneur in Afghanistan – where women rarely work outside their homes.

Roya made the seemingly impossible possible for women in Afghanistan and other developing countries. With internet classrooms and digital literacy campaigns, she is helping women break societal barriers and build the career of their dreams.

6. Sunita Williams 💪

Marathons are difficult. We think. We've never done one. But for Sunita, a normal gravity filled marathon was a piece of space-cake. She completed the Boston marathon IN SPACE(!) 🛰, making her the first person ever to do so.

7.  Adriana Ocampo 🔭

Adriana Ocampo - Ada Loveless Day

From being the little girl who would gaze at the stars in awe to becoming a planetary geologist – it was nothing short of a stellar journey for Adriana Ocampo. One of the biggest feathers in Adriana's cap is the discovery of the Chicxulub impact crater. It was the impact that led to this crater that wiped out the dinosaurs, and 50% of the earth's species. She has led several expeditions to study this fantastic event that has changed the course of evolution on our planet. Exciting stuff!

We love all these women and what they've done, and so would've Ada. Want to join in their footsteps? Why not code your way with Agent Asha: Mission Shark Bytes!
